A strange creature falls from the sky in a tiny village, lost in the Kazakh steppe: an old man with broken in the storm large wings. At first frightened people mean to kill the creature, but little by little they get used to him and leave him in piece, not being able to find a proper use for him. And only one little boy finds a true friend in him.
One day, saving the boy’s life, the old man dies, and the boy stays to live and to dream that some day he’ll get wings, too, and he will fly to the sky, where his best friend – the Old Angel – once longed to return.
“Wind Man” is a story about people who live in the immense and boundless Kazakh steppe.
The film might be called a poetic parable, where the steppe village becomes the micro world – by the example of which the authors deal with the issues common to all mankind. Like Good and Evil, truth and lie, love and death, recognizing oneself as part of the universe, the meaning of life of every individual person.
And the Wind Man himself, the Old Angel, is the story catalyst which helps people of the small village to expose themselves – and makes the audience sympathetic.
The whole film is penetrated with national coloring: the ancient laws and customs of the steppe people, the legends and myths that became part of their lives, specificity of the national character, their naïve and sincere faith in angels and demons. It is the poetic twist of the film that makes it so special.
Fascinating plot, national coloring, the unique cast, the bright characters and the poetry of narration – are those constituents that allow the authors to make an original and colorful canvas.
The authors give us a chance to feel the breathing of the steppe, to love the characters and even to show some sympathy for the villains - for these people live by their old laws and ancient traditions, and they have their own notions of Good and Evil.
For these people this story is neither a tale nor a myth. It’s a parable with it’s riddles and mysteries. Let the audience guess the riddles, and the mystery will remain mystery still.
